Mansion House Scholarship Scheme

The Mansion House Scholarship Scheme (MHSS, reg charity 1087486) is an educational charity that awards scholarships under the auspices of the Lord Mayor for study in the UK at Master’s Degree level (or equivalent professional training) in a subject connected with financial and professional services. The majority of the awards are made to applicants from overseas who are at an early stage of their careers and who can be expected to become future leaders and influencers in their fields. MHSS helps cement close links between participating countries and the City of London. During their time in the UK the scholars develop professionally and academically, they meet members of the City’s professional communities and attend at least one formal event at Mansion House.

MHSS was founded during the Mayoralty of Sir Richard Nichols in 1997/98 and since then has awarded over 200 scholarships in more than 70 countries, half of the countries are defined as ‘Developing’ by the OECD. Since 2019 one or two scholarships have been awarded in the UK with the help of regional Liveries and Guilds

MHSS is supported by generous donations from many Livery Companies and several Companies also offer pro bono support by mentoring the scholars or inviting them to events. The current trustees include 2 former Lord Mayors, Past Masters of the Mercers’, Grocers’ and Drapers’ Companies, an Old Bailey judge, 2 members of the Court of Aldermen and the son of the founding Lord Mayor.
