Uniform Youth Organisations

Livery Companies also maintain strong and active affiliations with the UK’s Uniformed Cadet Organisations, including:

These relationships form an important part of the Livery’s wider support to youth development and the Armed Forces community.

How Livery Companies Support Cadet Units

Affiliated Cadet units often contribute to Company life by:

  • providing Carpet Guards or supporting ceremonial elements at formal Livery dinners and events;
  • assisting with parades, services, and civic occasions within the City;
  • participating in Company open days, lectures and skills‑related activities.

In return, many Livery Companies support their units through:

  • annual prizes and awards recognising achievement, leadership, service and skill;
  • welfare grants, hardship support and assistance with equipment or uniforms;
  • sponsoring activities, including summer camps, fieldcraft weekends and Duke of Edinburgh programmes;
  • inviting Cadets and their families to Visitor Days, Court events or civic engagements;
  • offering career insight, mentoring, and exposure to trades and professions aligned with the Company’s traditions.

These relationships play a vital role in helping young people gain confidence, leadership skills and experience across the armed forces, policing and wider voluntary sectors.

Cadet Aides-de-Camp to the Lord Mayor

The Lord Mayor’s Office is supported by a dedicated team of Cadet Aides‑de‑Camp (ADCs), each representing one of the major Uniformed Youth Organisations. These Cadet ADCs:

  • act as the Lord Mayor’s link to the City’s Cadet Forces;
  • support formal and civic engagements across the Mayoral year;
  • represent their respective organisations at Mansion House, Guildhall and national events;
  • assist the Programme Office with advice around youth affiliation and engagement.

The Lord Mayor appoints six Cadet ADCs, drawn from:

  • Sea Cadets
  • Army Cadets
  • Air Cadets
  • Police Cadets
  • St John Ambulance
  • Scouts / Girlguiding (depending on the year)

These appointments help ensure that the Uniformed Youth Organisations maintain a strong, visible and meaningful presence in City ceremonial life.

Seeking a New Cadet Affiliation

Companies and Guilds wishing to form a new Cadet or Uniformed Youth affiliation are encouraged to contact the Lord Mayor’s Office. The Cadet ADCs, alongside Mansion House’s ceremonial staff, will be pleased to provide guidance on:

  • suitable units within London and beyond;
  • the process for forming an affiliation;
  • expectations of the Company and the Cadet unit;
  • ceremonial considerations and opportunities for engagement.
